What shipped

  • The name, and the reasons for it.
  • Three wordmarks. Stacked for signs and the site, a monogram for stamps, one line with the town for everything else.
  • A color and type system. Night over the river, morning fog, one lantern. Fraunces and Public Sans.
  • Business cards, two-sided, set up for print.
  • This website.

How it was made

The name

Everyone already knows how to spell it, say it and remember it. It carries two hundred years of story, the story is in the public domain, and it points at the exact place the studio stands.

There is a second meaning underneath. To tarry is to linger, and Tarrytown is the town where travelers stopped and stayed. Good design does the same thing. It makes people stop at the window, read the sign and remember the name. That is where the line comes from: design that lingers.

The wordmark

Three lines of Fraunces, with "Studio" in the italic. The dot of its i is a circle in lantern amber, and it is the whole of the identity's color. The dot alone is the favicon and the stamp.

There are no horsemen, no pumpkins and no cobwebs. The identity is the hills, the river and lantern light. One lantern is enough.

The cards

Two-sided, three and a half inches by two. The front is the stacked wordmark on the dark green the studio calls Hollow, and nothing else. The back is pale, with the one-line wordmark, a name and the town.

The site

Dark at the top of every page, then fog. It is built the way a client's site is built: fast on a phone, readable without scripts, with the booking wired in.
